New Blogs Up & Running
14 Oct 2003
Nerd Dice is a working example of my blogging system in "baked" form, meaning that it writes out static html files (see Aaron Swartz about baked vs. fried). It has its advantages and disadvantages, but for now it seems to be a good way to take care of that particular section of my site.
The publishing script uses a rendering script that looks up a template file and grabs the appropriate database objects, morphing them into HTML. This site and my writing journal are using the exact same rendering script, but instead of publishing html files they dynamically generate the pages. Reusing scripts is very handy, and updating things has been ultra simple so far. Someday I'll document this all properlly so that what I write here actually makes sense.
Even though Geek Icon hasn't officially launched yet as my new blog, I'm thinking it'll be ready to do so in the next couple of weeks. I've fiddled with the design 80 billion times and came up with something that doesn't look quite so awful in MSIE (although the PNG thing is still an issue). With the writing journal going strong and providing creative interest, I can totally geek out here and not worry that my dad is trying to read it and getting utterly bored. And ARJLog can finally begin its long-awaited final rest. (Wow, that ended up sounding more morbid than I thought. Oh well, I'm leaving it. Weblogs, like stories, must also have a beginning, middle, and end.)
