The Red Shoes

(I)
When sensible shoes
are too small it is time
to find a new fit

The rows of shoes gleaming
in the shop window and
when she sees the red shoes
she knows how they will fit
knows how they'll feel on her feet

And when she hands the
money over (holding the shoes
against her stomach)
she hands over
something precious

She slips on the left one
(knowing how it'll feel)
tightens the strap on the right
feels softness give
as she takes one step
then another

(II)
Spin fast until the lights are
stripes across your eyes
and you might fly
because for this moment
you are beautiful
and this moment and
the next and
faster

There lay your feet, just so,
like a display in a shop
window; there lay your
feet with the red shoes
still on them and
you remember
how it felt
that moment
and that, and the next
and you mourn
