The Last Voice Before the Silence
Sunlit afternoon, early autumn
Summer makes a slow exit through the trees
The warm wind brushes through the trees
And the leaves murmur tree secrets
The electric wires buzzing
The radio shouting static
My own skull mumbling its endless mantra
Thousands of voices over other voices
Each one distracting me in another direction
When
A Hand reached down and flipped a switch
And unnoticeably at first, the voices fell quiet
The one that said: "You suck"
And the one that said: "It's a lovely day"
And the one that said: "You've got to pay your bills tomorrow"
And the one that said: "How I'd like to kiss him"
And the one that said: "Drive straight"
Until it grew quieter, and then there was only
One Voice
And it was deep, and ringing, and clear, and it said:
"Be still"
And I was still
And it said: "Know Me"
And I knew who it was
For just one sweet, still moment
